New Technological Adaptation Derived From Deep Sea Photophores, 2012

How can observations of deep-sea fish photophores influence human evolution through technological innovations? As art/science collaboration (2 artists and 1 ichthyologist), we researched the three significant photophore patterns of deep-sea fishes at Florida Museum of Natural History. We discussed how to adapt the photophore patterns to human body, made a suit with LEDS based on the photophore patterns, and finally interacted with audience. Our performance is a trial to understand deep sea as unfamiliar space and deep-sea fish as different organisms, which make light by themselves to survive.
