UTA: Utopia Travel Agency, 2012
interactive installation & performance, collaboration by Hye Kim and Lu Cao
“Utopia Travel Agency” is an interactive installation and performance by creating a photo zone. This project is to simulate a superficial tourism, which shows preoccupied fantasy about countries to travel and obsession of taking photos as proof to others. In the opening, as travel agencies, Lu and I introduced 10 countries to travel. We asked visitors to choose one of the countries to travel, and recommended them to take a photo instead of traveling. We asked them to take a photo in fron of the background of the country, and the taken photo was projected as another background. The backgrounds of 10 countries come from the Epcot, which artificially represents utopian perspective of American, especially Disney. The backgrounds are not photos from real countries, but they are believable because they are reflection of utopian fantasy about foreign countries. Artists’ whisper about just taking photos without real travel is ridiculous, but it is difficult to deny our obsession to take photos when we travel.
